Born in Brookton, N.Y., Nov. 3,1844. At age of seventeen, on Aug. 11, 1862, in Allegan, Mich., he enlisted for three years and served in Company L of the 4th Michigan Cavalry until he was mustered out in Nashville, Tenn., July 1, 1865. After the war he was employed as bookkeeper by David B. Yerril, owner of several mills in and near Kalamazoo. Nothing is known of Haines after 1873. (from Haines Diary, 1862-1873 ; A.T. Bliss, Mich.
